Zachary Hebert.

Oxford County Wellness Collaborative - Norway, ME

Project Description

Strong/Gault Social Advancement Internship Grant Recipient

Zachary’s “passion for Maine public health, especially the interconnections between nutrition and chronic disease, emerged while working as an Emergency Medical Technician in 2015. This experience opened my eyes to the reality that the issues and diseases…I learned about are issues which continue to negatively affect members of my local community.” He found the perfect position to explore these issues further at Healthy Oxford Hills’ Oxford County Wellness Collaborative (OCWC), a network of partner organizations that run community initiatives “focused on improving health and wellness across the county.”

Zachary worked with staff members throughout the OCWC’s partner organizations, participating in OCWC meetings to discuss the future plans of the collective and working on a variety of projects. “Participating in a variety of public health initiatives, from conducting Rural Active Living Assessments to assisting with SNAPED Farmers’ Market healthy food classes, has allowed me to explore a variety of public health arenas and develop a better understanding of which areas of public health interest me further.”

Zachary’s time at the OCWC has affirmed his commitment to public health, service work, and community engagement. His internship “sparked my interest in further local health work….I am highly optimistic about the role…I might be able to…play in my community’s positive future because of the time spent here.”
