Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient
“I learned about myself and my preferences. I learned that I want to continue working in fast-paced environments that demand responsibility and ownership of tasks and projects. I learned that I want to work for a company that has a mission besides making money. And likely most importantly, I learned that I want to have fun with my career.”
MassChallenge is a unique organization. It’s a startup accelerator, founded by John Harthorne (Bowdoin ’95), that started in the depths of the recession. The internship was in Business Development. The job description said I would be assisting the partnerships team assisting and researching sponsors, giving tours, and various other roles. I’ve learned effective project management through my experience managing Office Hours and the final Capstone Project in which my team researched initial partnerships (read: funding) for a new MassChallenge expansion country. Office Hours is a program that is just as it sounds. It’s Office Hours for startups held by experts, mentors, and relevant community members. For example, if John Doe is a CMO and has 20+ years experience in marketing, he can list that on the MassChallenge website and startups can sign up for brief – usually 20 to 30 minute – conversations that commonly lead to stronger relationships.
