Project Description

Nikuradse-Matthews Summer Public Interest Fellowship Recipient

“Where better to have been than a hospital for someone who has future aspirations of becoming a doctor?”

I was able to work with an amazing team of co-workers who really cared about what I wanted to get out of the experience. They allowed me to give a lot of input and gave me freedom in constructing my day. I went in wanting to gain experience working hands-on with patients and that is exactly what I did every single day. I learned a lot about patient interaction, the hospital system, and was able to speak with doctors, nurses, and the child life staff about what their jobs consist of on a daily basis

I plan to pursue medical school to become a physician. I believe this internship taught me more about what pursuing a medical career path entails, as I now have experience with patients, and have gained valuable insight within this area of specialty. I have been involved in the much needed fundamentals of patience, communication, and team work, which make up the core of a doctor’s daily duties. Where better to have been than a hospital for someone who has future aspirations of becoming a doctor? I obviously did not perform medical procedures, but I am did what most people do; I started from the bottom by establishing a strong foundation in patient communication and understanding and plan on working my way up.
