“My goal is to bring these first-hand experiences into the classroom and connect them with greater themes in education.”
The responsibilities of my internship with SAJE involved community organizing, community leadership development, and community education. I was responsible for outreaching to local residents and workers via tabling, door-knocking, and making presentations to local groups, as well as follow-up phone calls and house visits. My major accomplishment was helping prepare community members to provide testimony at public hearings and/or speaking with the media. I helped residents structure their 2 minute speech with a brief introduction, how does the plan affect them, and why does it matter.
I played an essential role in mobilizing residents to community meetings, actions, and city meetings. I had great success facilitating small groups and educating people on complex issues that affect them and their family. I was very efficient in creating documents related to current campaigns, land use, and translating English to Spanish and vice versa. This experience has been phenomenal and has met my expectations in all possible ways. I have grown not only as a college student, but most importantly as a leader.
