Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient
“It was truly special to attend lectures by distinguished innovators, read their papers, and then discuss their discoveries in the context of sharing knowledge with the general public.”
The environment at the Broad also required some acclimation — specifically, adjusting to a 9-to-5 workday spent writing to meet assorted publication deadlines. I grew accustomed to the hours, brainstorming sessions, and ongoing edits required to publish a piece, but it all felt very foreign at first. Over the course of the summer, I completed three of these 800 to 1,000 word articles outlining experimental methods and analysis software packages created by researchers at the Broad. Of all the connections I made this summer, however, I found meeting members of the MIT Graduate Program in Science Writing most interesting. Having attended MIT’s “Thesis Day” last spring, I was keen to learn more about the fledgling careers and experiences of these new science writers. I am very grateful to Bowdoin for providing me with the opportunity for to investigate my intended field. Living and learning in Boston has been an invaluable experience.
