Warner Music Group - New York, NY

Project Description

Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient

I will be interning at the Warner Music Group in the Atlantic Records subdivision this summer because I am inspired by their commitment to expose college students to the music industry and hope that their program will further my future career goals. Atlantic Record’s internship program will allow me to experience on-the-job training by shadowing music industry professionals in a variety of departments like A&R, Production, and Marketing. I will be responsible for the tracking of multiple artists under Urban rosters, social media, and streaming numbers. I will also be scouting out new artists and presenting them to the Atlantic Records leadership team.

I am pursuing a degree in Music and Government and Legal Studies at Bowdoin. This coursework has allowed me to develop an understanding of the creative musical process and the theory and history behind it, and it has also taught me to think critically and practically about policy. These academic endeavors have been further augmented by my Africana Studies courses. I believe that both my unique academic and work experience with a focus on music will make me a great asset to Atlantic Records.

My passion for music has shown itself in many areas of my Bowdoin experience. I am a part of multiple music groups on campus, and in addition to being involved in these groups, I self-record and produce a number of songs. Two summers ago, I interned at the Outside of the Lines Art Studio in Medford, Massachusetts, where I worked with people who have developmental disabilities. At the studio, I taught a music class to the clients and organized a concert for the Medford community where we sang and played various instruments. This position gave me the opportunity to experience the potential for music to foster positive engagement and inspiration in a group of marginalized individuals.

I am hoping that by being exposed to the music industry at Atlantic Records, I will gain more knowledge about what it takes to create a performing arts (music-oriented) organization of my own. In the future, I hope to establish a program that uses music as a tool for community building in low-income areas. I would want the program to be non- profit and to cater to elementary school students. As a child, I had limited opportunities to pursue music but luckily, a program at my elementary school paid for me to take lessons at different organizations like the Juilliard School of Music. As an adult, I aim to promote music for students who have limited opportunities because of their social surroundings.
