Richard B. ’62 and Sabra Ladd Government Internship Recipient
“I wrote several speeches over the course of the summer, and am grateful and proud to have worked with some of best speechwriters in the nation.”
I expected two things out of the internship: to gain first-hand knowledge of the speechwriting process and to become a better, more informed writer. While I’ve accomplished both goals, what I learned most was how different groups of people – with different ideas, motives, and perspectives – comes together to make dry, intangible policy into poetic, relatable speeches for the American people.
Fascinated by politics since a young age, I knew I would love to be involved in a political career somehow. Yet this summer sparked a passion within me that I didn’t know existed. There is something so deliciously painful about searching for that one word that will make or break a line. There is something inspiring about members of the speechwriting, communications, and policy team coming together to create a work of art that will be heard by millions of Americans. I felt insurmountable motivation and gratification while helping draft and edit Vice President Biden’s speeches.
