Project Description

Richard B. ’62 and Sabra Ladd Government Internship

“This experience encouraged me to keep digging past a superficial understanding of geopolitical issues, in order to fully grasp the context for each situation.”

My activities included conducting research for a paper on Arctic sovereignty claims; attending panel discussions on Polar-related issues at the Wilson Center and at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; editing web content; establishing and curating the Polar Initiative Facebook page; posting internship notices to university career sties, and helping to setup for a Polar Initiative-hosted event. I became highly critical of the standard media narrative about ‘the race for the Arctic’ blithely regurgitated by foreign policy pundits. The reality, I learned, is both rosier and duller, while media thrives off of the negative and the thrilling. This experience encouraged me to keep digging past a superficial understanding of geopolitical issues, in order to fully grasp the context for each situation.
