Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient
“My experience this summer confirmed my passion for covering more offbeat and challenging news via the TV medium. I am excited to continue on the path onto which this internship has led me.”
My primary goal was to be able to witness and take part in the entire process of the production of a TV news story (or package) from start to finish. I worked closely with each of the integral members of the news team and had the opportunity to pitch ideas; set up, conduct, transcribe, film and edit interviews; write stories; and edit on Final Cut Pro. Because one of my main tasks was to pitch story ideas, I became well versed with a lot of the current events in India and South Asia.
I was able to put all that I learned into practice during my last week in India. We covered a story about the creation of a hospital called “Humanity Hospital” in Calcutta, India, that was the brainchild of one woman who lost her husband to medical negligence. I also filmed my own stand-up segment. Upon our return to Delhi I helped Priya write the story and got to record the story myself and worked with the cameraman to create my own package that I can use for my resume tape. It is incredible that I have a tangible finished product from my summer.
I can say with confidence that this experience gave me the initial skillset and tools that I need in order to pursue a career in the broadcast journalism industry. I developed even more of an interest in reporting, interviewing writing and editing. I had the invaluable opportunity to work so closely with experts in the field and was able to acquire know-how that many are exposed to in their first year of grad school. I intend to work for a media conglomerate or network upon graduation and wish to get my masters in journalism within the next few years.
