Strong/Gault Social Advancement Internship Grant Recipient
“Having not worked in the nonprofit sector before, this was a great way for me to get exposed to that type of environment. This makes me further appreciate the work that people do in nonprofits.”
I spent about two months in Buenos Aires, Argentina volunteering at a nonprofit organization called Voluntario Global as a marketing assistant.
Because many nonprofit organizations lack the same resources as for-profit institutions, they have fewer personnel and even fewer permanent volunteers at the organization. This led to a few fundamental changes in how I operated day to day. Instead of being given specific tasks with a clear agenda and a specific due date, my coordinator gave me a lot of responsibility, but little structure or guidance. I was responsible for a certain aspect of the organization and was given suggestions of how people in the past had handled it. Since there were not that many staff members, I not only had big tasks to complete, but I was also responsible for all the little things that came up as well. This was a completely new way of operating for me and was a great experience in the sense that I now feel confident in handling whole projects independently from beginning to end.
