“The stories of patients elevate the science of medicine because it contextualizes its miraculous nature: medicine makes it possible for us to ensure another page is turned in the lives of the people we serve.”
After my time at Bellevue I know that I have moments. I have pieces of stories, time, diagnoses, emotions, and people that bring to life my feelings. I have stories that allow me to explain the beauty of possibility that medicine offers; Moments that capture the shared vulnerabilities of being on the frontlines of life and death: Times that highlighted the frustrations inherent to our broken healthcare system; People that model the qualities and values I hope to always embody and reflect. Above all and perhaps most importantly, this summer gave me the reassurance that every bit of hard work and energy I have put into my dream of becoming a physician have been well worth it. There is no doubt in my mind that one day I will have the distinct honor of serving patients as Dr. Garcia.
