“Attending meetings and talking with coworkers was instrumental in adding to my understanding of how nonprofits function and I am very grateful that I was able to spend my summer working for such an impactful nonprofit in my community.”
My main project this summer was recruiting stores to enroll in the statewide No Buts! program. No Buts! is a training program for tobacco retailers to train their employees to prevent underage tobacco sales. Overall I recruited fourteen new stores to implement the No Buts! program and updated many other already participating No Buts! stores. Along with the No Buts! program I was also in charge of the Star Stores program. The Star Stores program aims to reduce the amount of tobacco advertising that is targeted to children. With this program I took youth to four different tobacco retailers and did environmental scans and surveys of the stores. We looked for many things including where the tobacco was placed in relation to candy displays, whether the signs and advertisement were three feet or above and the number of signs that promoted special deals and multipacks. After the store visit and survey we wrote each store manager a thank you letter and included any changes we thought they should make to reduce the amount of advertising targeted to youth.
