Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient
“Seeing the international business side of this amazing designer’s company was fascinating. I have always been drawn to potential careers in which I would be dealing with people from around the world. This was definitely true of Oscar de la Renta.”
I was drawn to event planning because it seemed like a career path in which I could use both my creative and my logical brains. At Company Agenda I learned that I would like to work for a boss that is more open minded and willing to explore more creative ideas. Although I do think that I gained the trust of my boss and I was handed a lot of responsibility with particular events over the summer (perhaps my biggest accomplishment at Company Agenda), my boss was still quite set on an exact way of conducting events. In the future, I wish to work with someone who is more open to brainstorming, taking risks and branching out.
I also spent one day a week in the accounts payable office at Oscar de la Renta. I definitely enjoyed this experience and wish that I could have spent a little more time there. Seeing the international business side of this amazing designer’s company was fascinating. I have always been drawn to potential careers in which I would be dealing with people from around the world. This was definitely true of Oscar de la Renta. My bosses spoke many languages and were constantly on the phone with other fashion companies and vendors in Paris, Milan, London, etc.
At the end of the day, however, my work in this office was straight accounting and while I enjoyed many aspects of this job, I do not think I want to pursue a career in accounting. I am an economics major with a knack for math, but I think that I would be more stimulated working in another division of finance. I think that I would prefer something along the lines of setting up investment strategies for companies like Oscar de la Renta or even working with smaller scale designers on company expansion and development strategies.
