Working with the Portland based non-profit not only taught me about the immigrant population of Maine’s largest city; I also learned about sustainable agriculture efforts in southern and mid-coast Maine. I helped lead Youth Growers, a program aimed at teaching high school students of diverse backgrounds about farming, healthy cooking, and food justice. The youth experienced first-hand the labor and reward that growing organic fruits and vegetables involves.
