Conservation International - Arlington, VA

Project Description

Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient

“My focus on Environmental Economics is based in my passion for sustainability. Sustainable management of natural systems and resources is critical to the future of humanity.” Jesse investigated the economic structures that make sustainability possible through his internship with Conservation International (CI), a multifaceted research, policy, and advocacy organization committed to environmental conservation.

Jesse’s duties at CI “focused on supporting their Global Public Partnerships team…tasked with engaging multilaterals like the World Bank, Global Environment Facility, UN Agencies, and others” to promote economic and political support for CI’s goals. Jesse compiled databases of agencies that receive funding from these organizations. This “took several weeks and was my most significant accomplishment at CI” and will be used in the future to guide CI’s future engagement with organizations.

Jesse’s time at CI clarified his career goals: “While I found my work interesting, I know leaving my internship that I do not want to pursue a career in environmental finance. The projects at CI to which I was exposed helped me realize that for the moment, my interests lie in economics applications (such as natural capital valuation) and more analytical work….I return to Bowdoin hoping to pursue an independent study focused on the economics of land use and climate change in the spring, and looking forward, I can see myself seeking out a career in conservation or environmental management.”
