Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient
As an Art History and Visual Arts major at Bowdoin, Hannah has primarily considered art an academic subject or an aesthetic pursuit, not as a business. “After being able to briefly explore both the gallery and museum realms of the art world, I am eager to turn my focus to the commercial side.” Through her summer internship at Christie’s art auction house, Hannah combined these areas of interest and explored “the balance that the auction house has between people who are passionate about art and objects, and operating as a business…affected by the global market.”
Hannah worked in Christie’s eCommerce department, where “my overarching project was to do business intelligence for buyers at online sales. I composed a list of all clients who have bought in both online and live auctions and did [market] research…allowing the team to market to the buyers most efficiently and effectively….Having the opportunity to research information that no one else had yet looked at made me feel that I was doing work that was valuable to the company as a whole.”
“In the beginning of my internship, I found it challenging to figure out how to fully immerse myself within other aspects of the company, as my department was isolated from many other parts of the business.” However, thanks to weekly lunch lectures held for interns by various employees throughout the company, Hannah was able to “see the variety of roles throughout the company and discover positions I was interested in, many of which I did not know existed before this summer,” including business administration and even web development.
