My relationship with numbers was not love at first sight. When I was accepted into Bowdoin and learned that there was no explicit freshman math requirement, I was elated. I never figured myself to be the math type anyway. Then, I was required to take the math intensive Data Analysis course to complete my psychology major.

Despite my personal opposition to enrollment, the class drastically exceeded my expectations. I found myself actually enjoying what peers considered tedious. I gleefully tackled weekly problem sets and relished meticulously completing statistical tests by hand. I was surprised to learn that running tests on SPSS was actually kind of cool, and admittedly nerdy.

This past semester, I was able to apply my newfound appreciation for data analysis when I took a Social Psychology Laboratory course. A few of my peers and I designed and conducted a study concerning existing political beliefs and their influence on the interpretation of news. We went through the entire process, from creating our own materials to analyzing results. My group was fortunate enough to find a significant interaction, and my passion for testing hypotheses and computing analyses was jumpstarted.

This summer I have the opportunity to work with Doctor Torrey Creed in her research laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania. As her intern, I would work with her as she tests Cognitive Behavior Therapies and their dissemination throughout the greater Philadelphia community. This internship would expand upon my limited experience in a laboratory setting, while simultaneously allowing me to be a part of real research with real community effects. Additionally, I would bear witness to clinical psychologists at work, an area of psychology that I have not yet had the opportunity to investigate. I trust this experience will directly influence my future and the direction I chose to take after graduation.
