Dentons Muñoz - Guatemala City, Guatemala

Project Description

Scott and Anne Perper Internship Fund Recipient

Dentons is the world’s largest law firm with 136 offices across 57 countries. As a Government and Legal Studies major and Latin American Studies minor, I am seriously considering attending law school after I obtain my degree from Bowdoin. Interning for Dentons in Guatemala City would be an invaluable opportunity that would allow me to further explore the world of law while adding an international perspective.

Guatemala has the largest GDP in Central America and Dentons’ office is located at its epicenter. Dentons is also next to the office of Grupo Portalis, a multinational real estate and economic development group through which the opportunity of this internship first arose. Dentons works frequently with Grupo Portalis and other similar organizations. An internship at Dentons would not only expose me to international law, litigation, and tax practices, but also incorporate me in important entrepreneurial and economic endeavors. The intersection of international law, business, and economic development greatly appealed to me, and it is why I chose the internship in Guatemala over a congressional internship in Washington, D.C.

Politics is a passion of mine, and until recently most of my internships and activism had been politics related. My focus on politics has been extremely rewarding but it has come at the expense of exploring other pursuits. While I know my involvement in politics is not over, I am very exited to immerse myself in new endeavors and explore the sectors of international law and economic development.

Spending a summer in Guatemala would also be immensely rewarding culturally. It would allow me to use my Spanish on a daily basis and expose me to a Latin American culture I do not know much about. I was born in Miami, FL to Cuban parents and lived in the Yucatan peninsula for twelve years; it is a privilege to say I am multicultural. The prospect of immersing myself in a Central American culture is very exiting for me. It would greatly enrich my understanding of Latin America and benefit my chosen minor at Bowdoin. Overall, an internship with Dentons in Guatemala would intensely expose me to a possible career choice, and allow me to grow as person of culture.
