“I now realize a medical career takes more sacrifice, intelligence, compassion and ambition than I ever imagined.”
This summer I have learned about new diseases, watched amazing operations and procedures and witnessed the thrill of the Trauma slot, but the most valuable take away is the new perspective I have on medicine. I now realize a medical career takes more sacrifice, intelligence, compassion and ambition than I ever imagined. Hearing the word sacrifice now immediately brings me back to my Bellevue experience. I had imagined that I could medically treat the majority of patients and the only emotional burden I may carry is if one of my patients dies. But this summer showed me that there is more to a patient then their chief medical complaint. Each patient has a story and although I may not be able to change that story, hearing it can have a lasting effect on me. This new perspective has helped me find a drive.
