Robert S. Goodfriend Summer Internship Fund Recipient
“From the environment to tourism to government, China is undergoing major changes.” Eduardo has studied Chinese at Bowdoin and spent a semester studying in Kunming, China, and has glimpsed many of these changes firsthand. Eduardo brought both his knowledge of Chinese society and his experience reporting for the Bowdoin Orient and Change Magazine to his internship with GoKunming, an online media outlet focused on news and travel information geared towards foreigners living in or visiting the Kunming area.
At GoKunming, Eduardo followed stories throughout the writing process. He researched stories using Chinese-language sources, planned trips to investigate stories, conducted interviews with foreign dignitaries and local community members, and drafted articles. Eduardo also helped manage GoKunming’s social media presence, creating an Instagram account that gained 200 followers before his departure and running a Facebook ad campaign “that saw the business’ average page likes per day increase tenfold.” Eduardo also gained business experience by including drafting sponsorship proposals for major companies including Nikon and Canon. “I hadn’t written sponsorship pitches before, so I had to do some research before diving in.”
Eduardo gained confidence due to the challenges of living independently in China. “This experience differed [from studying abroad] in that I was responsible for my own living situation, transportation, dining, and more. The prospect of living in China for post-graduation employment is much less daunting now.” And thanks to this internship, Eduardo confirmed working in his preferred career track in China as a genuine possibility: “My experiences taught me a great deal about what it means to do journalism in China, especially from a foreign perspective and for a largely foreign audience.”
