Preston Public Interest Career Fund Recipient
“I am more sure than ever that I want to continue work in education and in the public service sector after I graduate and more confident in my own abilities to tackle the challenges that such a career path will present.”
Over the course of the summer, with the support of my mentor teacher, I gained both skills and confidence in the classroom and learned a great deal about the importance and effectiveness of positive, constructive feedback. I received regular observation and feedback from both my mentor teacher and program directors, and they provided a model for me as I strove to build strong relationships and a positive classroom culture with my own students.
In addition to working with students and learning of the importance of the student-teacher relationship, I also learned a great deal about the importance of teamwork and collaboration as I worked with the 40-person staff. I have never had the opportunity to work with such a talented and dedicated group of college students as I did this summer, but I never ceased to be amazed by how much this group could accomplish when we all worked together.
Although my summer with Breakthrough was not without its ups and downs, it certainly confirmed my passion for education, working with youth, and dedicating myself to a career in the public sector.
