“My expectations were met in every way possible, and I learned more than I could have ever imagined.”
I accepted an internship with Simply Smiles on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Reservation with two primary expectations: to learn about the ins and outs of non-profit organizations and to learn about this organization’s approach to the sustainable development of a small town in South Dakota.
My internship with Simply Smiles this summer was influential and inspiring. Working with the Lakota people of La Plant clarified some of the beliefs I have about non-profits and charity work- that charity should be viewed through a lens of sustainability. Poverty is multi-faceted, and our approaches to poverty should be multi-faceted. The Lakota people are plagued not only by physical poverty but also by a poverty of spirit, and the sustainable development of the town of La Plant must address this aspect as well. This internship was critical in helping me to develop my opinions so that I may continue to align myself with organizations that share the same values.
