“I learned not only about the future of banking in Bangladesh, but also about the challenges that low-income Bengalis face in running their businesses.”
While working at BRAC Bank Limited (BBL), I certainly obtained a far greater understanding of the needs of these small businesses, the services that can help deliver those needs, and the structure and functions of large for-profit banks attempting to provide the services. Although I did not do much in the way of small day-to-day tasks, my project measuring turn around time and service delivery at the bank’s Krishi (micro) branches and small and medium sized enterprise service centers allowed me to observe a variety of services delivered at BBL’s branches, and understand what services are most needed by customers. Additionally, in the process of making recommendations for the bank to improve their service delivery, I learned not only about the future of banking in Bangladesh, but also about the challenges that low-income Bengalis face in running their businesses.
